In lion dancing the music is the soul and the voice of the lion. The instruments
used for traditional lion dancing include the drum, the cymbals and the gong.

The drum represents
the roar and the soul
of the lion. The
drummer must bring
out the emotion of the
lion in the performance.
Playing the drum loud and
hard makes the lion happy
and aggressive. However,
playing the drum low and soft makes
the lion cautious, curious and melancholy.

There are a variety of drum beats and
routines when performing lion dancing.
Do not assume there is a right or wrong
way to play the drums. In the past, the
drum beat was individual and unique for
each lion dance troupe. Today a
standardized drum routine is taught
as a contemporary set for competition.
